NY SANE Coalition Reaffirms its Fight Against Shelter Limits
Co-conveners of NY SANE Issue a Statement on Founding Members' Testimony
NEW YORK, NY — Last month, Christine Quinn, President & CEO of Win, and members of the NY SANE Coalition — Legal Aid Society, Coalition for the Homeless, and African Communities Together — testified before the New York City Council to convey the dire consequences of the 30-and-60-day shelter limits implemented by the Adams Administration.
In solidarity with their testimony, the co-conveners of the NY SANE Coalition have released the following statement:
"We cannot overstate the profound harm these short-term shelter limits inflict on struggling New Yorkers– destabilizing families, uprooting children from their schools, and severing critical community and support networks.
As a united front, the NY SANE Coalition calls on Mayor Adams to end the 30- and 60-day shelter rules and embrace the solutions championed by Win, Legal Aid Society, Coalition for the Homeless, and African Communities Together in their testimony. From extending housing vouchers to new arrivals and increasing investments in immigration legal services, there are real, tangible solutions we could work towards.
Continuing with ineffective band-aid fixes will only erode and endanger our already fragile safety net. Restrictive and shortsighted housing policies threaten to deepen the homelessness crisis.
We demand bold, long-term solutions that guarantee safety, stability, and dignity for all residents – especially migrants, asylum seekers, and noncitizens. Our city must lead with vision and compassion, fostering policies that create pathways to permanent housing and true community integration, rather than creating more barriers for our unhoused neighbors.”
