NEW YORK SHELTER FOR ALL IN NEED EQUALLY (NY SANE) COALITION RESPONSE TO RIGHT TO SHELTER LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT

Yesterday, a Manhattan Supreme Court Judge directed New York City, New York State, the Legal Aid Society and the Coalition for the Homeless to enter mediation toward a settlement in the recent lawsuit over New York City’s right to shelter. This development comes after the Adams Administration asked the court to limit the right to shelter amid the migrant crisis. In response, the co-conveners (Episcopal Diocese, Legal Aid Society, Coalition for the Homeless, and Win) of the NY SANE Coalition  — comprised of religious leaders, organized labor, and advocates defending the right to shelter — released the following statement:

“For decades, every New Yorker has been given the option to stay in shelter, protected from the elements. The guarantee of shelter is not only a right, but one of our most important values as a city. No one wants to see new arrivals relegated to living on the street, and we all want to ensure the 30,000 children whose families are experiencing homelessness have a safe place to live. That’s why we are pleased the Mayor and Governor have agreed to mediation, and we are confident that the parties will be able to find inclusive and humane solutions based on principles of compassion and care for our neighbors in need.”
